The international conference "Asteroids 2001: from Piazzi to the 3rd Millennium" will be held in Santa Flavia (Palermo) from 11 to 16 June 2001. The conference aims to present the current understanding of asteroid science. Invited reviews, contributed papers, and poster papers will be presented. In addition, Asteroids 2001 will bring together authors for the Space Science Series book "Asteroids III", that will be published by the University of Arizona Press. The conference is organized by Osservatorio Astronomico di Palermo G.S. Vaiana, Dipartimento di Scienze Fisiche e Astronomiche dell'Universita' di Palermo, Dipartimento di Fisica e Astronomia dell'Universita' di Catania, Osservatorio Astrofisico di Catania and Osservatorio Astronomico di Torino as part of the celebrations of the 200th anniversary of Giuseppe Piazzi's discovery of 1 Ceres from the tower of Palermo Observatory on January 1st 1801.
Registration and attendance at the Asteroids 2001 conference is open only to professionals in astronomy, planetary science, and their students.

The easiest way to reach Palermo is by air. There are a few direct flights from a number of European cities, but usually the most convenient way to reach Palermo from abroad is via a connecting flight in Rome or Milano Malpensa.
From the Falcone and Borsellino airport, you can easily reach the centre of Palermo by public transportation. A frequent bus service runs from just outside the arrival area. The bus fare from the airport costs Lit. 9,000 and can be paid on the bus. You should get off at Stazione Centrale (last stop) and then take a train to Santa Flavia. Frequency of trains is approx. every 30-60 min., duration of the journey less than 20 min. The ticket costs about Lit. 4,000, to be paid before boarding. For a timetable of the train service, please consult the Ferrovie dello Stato site at http://orario.fs-on-line.com/ (enter "Palermo Centrale" in the "Stazione di partenza" box, "Santa Flavia" in the "Stazione di arrivo" box). Please note that the timetable will be changed on June 9th.
The distance between Santa Flavia Station and the Hotel Zagarella is approx. 2 Km.
Palermo can also be reached through other means of transportation: ferries from Naples or other cities, bus, trains.
On Sunday 10th June a free shuttle service handled by Centro Masterly Congress Organizer will be available from the airport starting at 14.00. A bus will leave the airport every two hours until arrival of the last scheduled flight. To ensure better service, it is important that you fill in the last entry in your hotel reservation form.
Fixed taxi fees to the Zagarella Hotel from the airport and back
We have arranged for the fixed fee of Lit. 90.000 to be charged to ASTEROIDS 2001 participants by Cooperativa Autoradio Taxi (Phone +39-091-513311 - http://www.palermoweb.com/autoradiotaxi) for the whole duration of the meeting. The fee covers the transfer from the airport to Hotel Zagarella, in Santa Flavia. However, there might be a slight surcharge for night service. A fixed fee of Lit. 45.000 will be charged to participants for the transfer from Palermo to Hotel Zagarella in Santa Flavia.
Please make sure the taxi driver is aware that you are an Asteroids 2001 conference participant.
For the return trip to the airport, sign up sheets to share a taxi will be available in the secretariat area.
For the return trip to the airport, sign up sheets to share a taxi will be posted.
Temperatures in mid June are usually around 27-30° C with little difference between night and day, thus allowing you to go swimming either in Santa Flavia or at nearby places.
